Welcome to the first edition of Startup Spotlight, our weekly feature on the people building Africa's tech future. We're starting close to home with Nolap Technologies, a startup founded by students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

The problem: studying is messy

Ask any student about exam season and you'll hear the same story. Past questions sit in one WhatsApp group, lecture slides in another, handouts in a folder somewhere. There's rarely a clear plan for what to revise or when, and it's hard to know which topics you're actually weak in until the exam tells you.

The product: Nolap Prep

Nolap Prep is the team's answer: a smart academic preparation platform designed to make studying more efficient and organised. It brings together:

• Structured study resources, so materials live in one place.

• Smart revision tools to help students practise what matters.

• Performance tracking, so students can see where they're improving and where they need work.

• A personalised learning experience built around each student.

The proof: judges backed it

Nolap Technologies won ₵30,000 in funding at the SME Business Pitch Competition during the 2026 MTN AshantiFest, part of MTN Ghana's SME Accelerate Programme, a nationwide initiative offering business training, mentorship, digital tools and funding. According to our earlier coverage, the judges were impressed by a clear, relatable problem, a practical and scalable solution, and the team's execution and vision.

The team

The startup is led by CEO Mortoti-Agogyi Jephtah Lorlornyo, with a team of KNUST students. After the win, he said the team would make the necessary investments to scale Nolap Prep and reach more students.

What's next

• Improving Nolap Prep's features and user experience.

• Expanding to more students and institutions.

• Scaling across Ghana.

Why we picked Nolap

Nolap is a good example of what Startup Spotlight is about: founders solving a problem they live with every day, and not waiting until graduation to start. You can learn more at nolapprep.com and nolaptech.com.
