Apple has finally joined the foldable race. The iPhone Duo, Apple's first folding iPhone, went on sale on Friday, 23 October 2026, in more than 70 countries and regions. Online stock disappeared within minutes, and fans queued outside Apple Stores from the early hours. Here's what the phone actually is, what it costs, what reviewers think, and what it means if you're in Ghana.
What is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is a book-style foldable. Closed, it works like a compact iPhone with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple says is 50% bigger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both screens refresh at up to 120Hz and reach 3,000 nits outdoors.
It's built from titanium, measures 5.2mm thin when open and 11.3mm when closed, and weighs 254 grams. It comes in two colours, Night Sky and Star White.

The specs that matter
• Chip: A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU performance than last year's A19 Pro.
• Cameras: 48MP main and 48MP ultra wide on the back, plus a 12MP front camera and an under-display camera on the inner screen. There's no telephoto lens, so zoom tops out at 2x optical quality.
• Battery: one cell on each half. Apple rates it at up to 24 hours of typical use and about 50% charge in 20 minutes with a 60W charger.
• Unlock: Touch ID in the side button. There's no Face ID.
• SIM: eSIM only. There's no physical SIM tray anywhere in the world.
• Toughness: IP68 water and dust resistance. Apple says the inner screen is designed to minimise the crease, not remove it.
• Software: iOS 27 with Split View, so you can run two apps side by side on the big screen. Apple Pencil support is promised for later in 2026.
How much does it cost?
This is where it hurts. In the US, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, which is $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and climbs quickly with storage:
• 256GB: $1,999
• 512GB: $2,199
• 1TB: $2,599
• 2TB: $3,199
Those are US prices before tax. Prices outside the US are usually higher once taxes and import costs are added.

Launch day: sold out in minutes
Apple announced the Duo on 9 September and opened preorders on 16 October. When online inventory ran out within minutes, buyers headed to stores instead, with lines forming from around 5 a.m. in some cities. MacRumors reported a limit of two units per customer in the US, and some new online orders are now showing delivery dates in early 2027. A second wave of 28 more countries and regions is due from 30 October.

What reviewers are saying
Most early reviews are positive about the hardware. Engadget said Apple sidestepped most of the growing pains a new kind of gadget usually has, TechRadar called it a fully realised folding phone, and 9to5Mac singled out the hinge. The praise centres on the display, the titanium build and how portable it feels.
Not everyone is convinced. The Verge called it expensive and full of compromises, and CNN, while calling it Apple's standout product in years, named the price as the biggest drawback. Long-term questions, like how the hinge and crease hold up after a year of daily use, can't be answered yet.
What it means for Ghana
Apple hasn't announced a Ghana price, and Ghana doesn't have an official Apple Store. Most iPhones here arrive through resellers and importers, so expect the Duo to cost well above its US price when it shows up, especially in the first few months while supply is tight. South Africa was part of the first launch wave, while markets like Nigeria were not.
One thing working in Ghana's favour is eSIM. Because the Duo has no SIM tray, you need a network that supports eSIM. MTN Ghana and AirtelTigo both launched eSIM back in 2022, so check with your network before you buy. Also think about repairs: this is a brand-new foldable, parts will be scarce at first, and a grey-market unit may not come with a warranty that's honoured locally.
Should you buy one?
If you want the newest thing from Apple and the price doesn't scare you, the Duo looks like a polished first attempt. For most people, especially in Ghana, it makes sense to wait: for local pricing, for more stock, for Apple Pencil support, and for real-world reports on durability. Foldables from Samsung, Google and others are also cheaper and already on their later generations.
The bottom line
The iPhone Duo is Apple's biggest new iPhone design in years and it launched to huge demand. It's also the most expensive iPhone ever, with trade-offs like no telephoto camera and no Face ID. It proves Apple can make a foldable. Whether it's worth $2,000 or more is your call. Would you buy one?
