- AI agent vs chatbot: what's the difference?
- Safety tips: stay in control
You've probably used an AI chatbot to answer a question or write a message. AI agents take the next step: instead of just replying, they take actions to finish a task for you. It's one of the biggest shifts happening in technology right now, so here's a plain-English guide.
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that can plan and take actions on its own to complete a goal. You give it a task, and it works out the steps, uses the tools it has access to, such as a browser, an app or your calendar, and carries the task through, usually checking with you before anything important happens.
AI agent vs chatbot: what's the difference?
• A chatbot answers. Ask it for flight options and it lists some for you to check yourself.
• An agent acts. Ask it to book a flight and it searches, compares prices, fills in the booking and asks you to approve.
• A chatbot works inside one conversation. An agent can work across websites and apps.
• A chatbot needs you for every step. An agent handles the steps and comes back to you for decisions.
How AI agents work
Most AI agents follow the same simple loop:
• Goal: you describe what you want done.
• Plan: the agent breaks the goal into smaller steps.
• Act: it uses tools such as search, apps or forms to carry out each step.
• Check: it reviews the result and adjusts if something went wrong.
• Confirm: it asks you to approve key actions, like paying or sending a message.

Everyday examples
• Planning a trip: finding flights and hotels within your budget and dates.
• Shopping: comparing prices across stores and building a cart for you to review.
• Work admin: sorting emails, drafting replies and scheduling meetings.
• Research: reading many web pages and summarising what they say, with links.
Why it matters
Big technology companies are racing to build agents into the apps people already use. For individuals, that means less time on repetitive tasks. For businesses, it means hours of admin work that can be handed off. It also means the question of trust becomes central: what should an AI be allowed to do without a person signing off?
Safety tips: stay in control
• Never share your mobile money PIN, bank login or passwords with any AI tool.
• Keep approval on for payments, messages and anything you can't undo.
• Only connect an agent to the apps it actually needs for the task.
• Check the result before you rely on it. Agents can make mistakes.
• Use well-known, reputable tools, and be wary of apps promising to make money for you automatically.
The bottom line
AI agents are AI that does, not just AI that talks. Used well, they can save you real time. Used carelessly, they can make costly mistakes on your behalf. The simple rule for the agent era: let it do the work, but keep the final say.
