YouTube is making a major change to its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) entry requirements, and creators planning to monetize their channels will need to aim for significantly higher numbers.

Starting February 1, 2027, new creators applying to the YouTube Partner Program will need to reach 1,000 subscribers and meet one of two higher engagement thresholds.

Creators will need either:

  • 8,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days, or

  • 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

This represents a significant increase from the previous full YPP monetization thresholds of 4,000 valid public watch hours or 10 million valid public Shorts views.

What Is Changing?

The biggest change is the increase in the amount of audience engagement required before new creators can enter the full monetization program.

Previously, creators could qualify for full YPP monetization with:

1,000 subscribers + 4,000 valid public watch hours in 12 months

OR

1,000 subscribers + 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days.

From February 1, 2027, the thresholds will become:

1,000 subscribers + 8,000 qualified public watch hours in 365 days

OR

1,000 subscribers + 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

In other words, the watch-hour requirement doubles, while the Shorts-view requirement also doubles.

What About Creators Already in the YouTube Partner Program?

There is an important distinction here.

The announced change is specifically for new creators applying to the YPP. Creators who are already in the YouTube Partner Program are not being removed simply because of this new entry threshold.

This means existing monetized creators don't need to suddenly hit 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views just because the new requirements are coming into effect.

The 500-Subscriber Level Is Still Available

Not everything is changing.

YouTube will continue to provide an earlier path for eligible creators to access features such as fan funding, including tools like memberships and Super Chat.

Creators can reach this earlier level with:

500 subscribers

plus either:

3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days

or

3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

These requirements remain unchanged under the announced update.

However, this lower threshold should not be confused with the full monetization threshold for advertising revenue.

What Does This Mean for New YouTubers?

For new creators, the change makes consistency and long-term content strategy even more important.

Creators relying heavily on Shorts will now need to generate 20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days to qualify through the Shorts route.

For long-form creators, 8,000 watch hours within 365 days means producing content that doesn't just attract clicks but keeps viewers watching.

This puts even greater emphasis on:

  • Strong video topics

  • Better thumbnails

  • Compelling titles

  • Audience retention

  • Consistent uploads

  • Long-form content strategy

  • High-quality Shorts

  • Building a loyal audience

Simply reaching 1,000 subscribers will no longer be enough to qualify for the full YPP threshold.

What Should Creators Do Now?

If you're working toward monetization, there's no reason to wait until 2027.

Creators who are serious about building a YouTube business should start focusing on audience growth and watch time now.

Instead of creating content solely to hit monetization numbers, focus on building a channel that people actually want to return to.

A strong strategy could include combining long-form videos with Shorts. Shorts can help attract new viewers and subscribers, while long-form content can help build deeper engagement and watch time.

Most importantly, creators should pay attention to what their audience is actually watching.

Look at your analytics and identify:

Which videos get the most views?
Which videos keep people watching the longest?
Which topics bring new subscribers?
Where are viewers dropping off?

Those insights can help you create more of the content your audience already responds to.

The Bottom Line

YouTube's upcoming YPP changes raise the bar for new creators.

From February 1, 2027, new applicants will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

The earlier-access threshold of 500 subscribers + 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views remains available for eligible fan-funding features.

For creators who haven't started yet, the message is simple:

Start now. Build consistently. Learn your audience. Improve your content.

The monetization goal may be getting bigger, but so is the opportunity to build a real audience and a sustainable creator business.
